You can rent a house to live, you can rent a car to travel around, and now you can rent a girlfriend to spend the weekends hanging out with you.
Surfing on the Internet, there are increasingly more young girls joining the new “part-time job”, which is known by people since last year, to be a rental girlfriend.
While the girls advertise themselves by making posts in different forums, which are popular among the internet users, some men are making posts to search for and waiting for the replies of a rental girlfriend.
Owners of the several websites, which are set up as platforms to do the business of rental girlfriend services, are not only attracting more visitors, but also more girls to resgister to be one of their rental girlfriends.
They make profits by charging the rental girlfriends commission, which is calculated according to how much they earn each time, for matching them with customers successfully.
Being a rental girlfriend, who mainly go out with their customers several hours or a day, is different from those who sell their bodies by doing sex trade to earn money.
There is no hug, kiss or body touch, except holding hands, are involved.
The rental girlfriends, mostly aged from 16 to 23, do their job by going out with their customers just like the usual dating of lovers, like shopping, watching movies and having dinners.
Miss Cindy Wong, a Form 6 student studying at a secondary school in Sheung Shui, became a rental girlfriend since the Christmas last year.
Wong read a post in the “make-friend zone”of a forum made by a male, who searched for a rental girlfriend to go out in Christmas, making her first attempt to be a rental girlfriend by replying the post.
She said she was attracted by the high salary ($700 a night) and the free entertainment and activity which were paid by the customer.
“At the beginning, it is becasue of curiosity and I do not worry about safety much becasue the places we go are public areas and have many people, ” said Wong.
She found her customers in some forums on the internet occassionally after she had her first experience.
“ We [students] cannot earn much from doing part-time jobs, like working for a fast food chain, we only have $20,” said Wong.
“But now I work as a rental girlfriend, I can earn more money more easily, without selling myself and have free entertainment when I go out with them [customers].”
She said she earned $100 to $150 per hour and usually went out a few hours each time, adding she treated it as “a kind of normal part-time job which does not affect her study”.
“It is attractive that we [rental girlfriends] will even earn more in holidays or festivals like Chirstmas and Valentine’s Day, usually $200 to $300 per hour,” she said.
Miss Lam, who refused to disclose her name, a 19-year-old girl, started to be a rental girlfriend by registration in a website two months ago.
She knew about it from some of her friends who also wanted to join at that time.
“It is becasue of money. Even I need to pay commission [to the owner of the website], I can still earn much,” said Lam, adding that 30 per cent of how much she earned each time was commission.
“I want to buy a lot of things, but my family does not give me much money, so I find this way to earn my own.”
Lam joined the website to be a rental girlfriend also becasue she “thought that it was safer than finding customers on the Internet herself”.
“It is becasue the agent would handle the procedures. They deal with the customers, have their information and give us to have a look before we make decision on whether to go or not,” said Lam, adding that she didn’t have any bad experiences so far.
According to Wong and Lam, their customers were usually aged 25 or above who wanted to have the feelings of dating with young girls. They said that some were “otaku” who did not have love experiences before.
Mr Chan, 28, who refused to disclose his name, once rented a girlfriend in a website to go out during weekend.
“I didn’t have any dating experience before and I thought that the charges were reasonable. I just wanted to try,” said Chan.
Chan, who went out with the rental girlfriend for four hours at that time, said that the charge was $100 per hour, paying for her movie ticket and the dinner as well.
He rented a girfriend for one more time but no more becasue he found himself lost the curiosity.
“The reasons of why people having rental girlfriends are different. Some people want to have have the feeling of dating with young school girls, some are bored and just curious to have a try,” he said, adding that usually people would not find the same rental girlfriend again.
Know Girl Easy, a website operated as the agent of rental girlfriend business, replied in the email that the numbers of girls, customers and enquires keep increasing.
It said that it will ask their customers to give the general information like name and age, also mention that they and the girls need to show their Identity Cards to each other when they meet, to ensure the safety of the rental girls.
It will also let the customers know the rules, like no kiss or no body touch, which are mentioned in the websites, before they go out with the rental girlfriends, preventing any conflicts.
Mr Lee Man-hon, a social worker, conerned about the trend that more young girls are working as rental girlfriend.
“The role of the agents [the websites] is matching the girls with customers. Safety is a problem. They cannot guarantee it,” he said.
“The girls who work as rental girlfriend should have the awareness that they may meet bad people who may harm them. They need be very careful and to know how to save themselves if anything happen,” he continued.
Even as it said, the rental girlfriends and their customer do not have sex trade, it would also bring adverse effects on the girls,” said Chan.
He said that the girls would have a wrong attitudes towards dating and earning money, adding that parents and teachers should have better communication with them.
“No matter when we want to make friends or find our lovers, it should be through normal social life.”
